Verna Mae (Ressler) Climenhaga died on September 2, 2019. She was born on May 29, 1932 to Clarence and Mary Ressler at home on the family farm. Verna Mae joined the Conoy Brethren in Christ Church as a young girl, and she was baptized in the farm pond.
For the first years of her education, grades 1 to 8, she attended a one room school house, outside of Elizabethtown, PA. After passing a state test for two years education, she went to the Messiah Academy for grades 11 and 12, graduating in the class of 1955. Next, she attended junior college at Messiah College, graduating in 1957.
Upon graduation, she went to work in home mission work at the Brethren in Christ Navajo Mission, in New Mexico. She began work there as a cook for both mission workers, and students at the school. She then went into general office work for the mission. She was such a valued worker that when one supervisor of the mission transferred to the Brethren in Christ Missions office, then in Elizabethtown, he asked the new supervisor to release Verna Mae to return to Pennsylvania. However, Verna Mae’s mother had a heart attack which necessitated her return to her home in Pennsylvania, instead of to the Missions office.
When Verna Mae was again free to work, she was able to join the Brethren Christ Missions Office staff, working as a bookkeeper. One of her last responsibilities while there was helping move the office from its Elizabethtown location to Grantham.
In 1993, Verna Mae Ressler married David E. Climenhaga. They were married for 24 years, until David’s death in 2017. Upon her marriage, she retired from her long-time position of 25 years, and moved to Messiah Village, where David lived.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Verna Mae was predeceased by her brother Melvin. Verna Mae is survived by her three stepchildren and their spouses, Donna Wenger (Carlin), Daryl Climenhaga (Lois) and Denise Harman (Gail). She is survived by her five step-grandchildren, and by seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Marlin Ressler (Anna Ruth), Nelson Ressler (Hazel), and her sister Faye Martin (Lester), and her sister-in-law Jane Ressler (Melvin).
Services will be September 7 (Saturday) at 10:30 a.m. at the Messiah Village Chapel, with interment to follow at the Grantham Memorial Park. There will be a brief time for viewing and greeting family members at 10 a.m. at the Messiah Village Chapel (100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055).
Memorial contributions may be made to Brethren in Christ Missions, or the Benevolence Fund at Messiah Village.
